To become a clinical coder in the UK you must be in a clinical coding role. Many NHS Trusts offer positions for trainees. Visit the NHS jobs website for information about current openings. To be an accredited clinical coder you are required to pass the NCCQ (National Clinical Coding Qualification (UK)) exam.

AI will not replace coding entirely. Rather, it will augment the coding process, handling routine tasks, while human coding will focus on more complex aspects that require critical thinking and contextual understanding.

Medical coders in the UK typically earn between £22,000 and £35,000 per year, with NHS Band 4/5 being common for qualified staff. Entry-level or trainee roles often start around £22,000–£24,000, while experienced or senior clinical coders can earn £35,000–£46,000, particularly in London or private healthcare.
